Visitors to regattas at Crystal Lake tell us that its large
surface area and relatively robust winds make it among the best lakes for E-Scow
racing. So it's ironical that Es didn't appear as an organized fleet at
the CLYC until the 1966 season. According to Mal Morency, for several
years previously, Jack Brereton had been bringing his E-Scow to Crystal, and in
1966 three other members decided to purchase Es: Harold McClure, Bill
Webb, and Mal Morency. Thus was born the CLYC E-Scow Fleet.
One of our favorite sailors over the years was Harold McClure,
who was a great competitor and a wonderful guy. One anecdote that
illustrates Harold's generosity occurred in the summer of 1970. At the end
of that season, Harold decided that he needed a new E-Scow for the WMYA to be
held at Crystal the next season. He also felt it would be a good thing for
the E fleet at Crystal if they increased the number of boats. So, he
approached the winner of that year's C-Scow Fleet Seasons, Ted Greene, and
offered to swap Harold's current E for Ted's C. Of course, Ted couldn't
refuse, so Harold traded the C in on a new E. But Harold was as smart as
he was generous: the deal he cut with Melges Boatworks specified that
Buddy Melges would crew for Harold in the WMYA Regatta the following year.
With a new boat and an excellent crew, Harold walked away with the WMYA trophy
in 1971!
