Ladies Butterfly Fleet
Looking Back at the Summer of 2004
The CLYC Ladies Butterfly Fleet had another successful summer sailing
season in 2004. Our fleet included ten lady skippers this year and
sixteen races. There was fierce competition for the trophies and awards,
some of which weren’t decided until the last race of the season. In that
last race, Judy Webb Blakeney found just enough wind to beat her sister,
Carol Webb Mohr. In the process, Judy won the Mary Louise MacMillan
trophy for most first place races in a season. The two sisters placed
the same way for the season trophies. Also, Kim Albright took third,
Kathy Zalar fourth, Chris Albright fifth and Michelle Ferenchick sixth
for the season.
This year, our fleet sailed in an Open format, whereby a crew was
optional. (In the past, taking crew was a fleet requirement.) While this
may have diminished some of the social aspects of our fleet, it improved
the quality of our sailing. Many of our skippers allowed that this was
the first time they raced alone…and all survived with smiles. We
welcomed a few first time skippers, including Hannah Black and Nini
Halkett. We missed a few of our stalwart skippers, like Andrea Haidle,
due to other life demands this summer. We hope to see all of you back on
your Butterfly sailboats next summer for more great sailing.
On the social front, the Ladies Night Out tradition continued and gained
speed in 2004. One of the last events was at Bob and Sue King’s
beautiful bed and breakfast on the bluffs of Lake Michigan, overlooking
Frankfort Harbor. We were treated to a cooking demonstration by Ladies
Butterfly Fleet member and chef extraordinaire, Michelle Ferenchick. We
enjoyed the food, ambiance, friendship and sunset…and determined that
next year a sleepover would be a good idea. I have dibs on the sleeping
porch with a view!
Lastly, I want to acknowledge the First Mate in organizing for our
fleet, Kathy Zalar. I would have run aground many times, if not for her
help, support and super ability in easily getting the impossible done
with a smile. Thanks for your great bailing abilities, Kathy!
See you all out on the lake in the Summer of 2005. I can almost feel the
spray of Crystal Lake on my face!
